I also mentions the different ways in which different students cope with the stress and with the decision of commuting and still be able to fulfill their other responsibilities.   Lastly, it shows that students who commute have different perspectives than those who commute when faced with the same issue because their enviroment influences their thinking and their mindset.  (4) Author Dr. John J. Summary of the reading: Paying for the Party , Elizabeth Armstrong and Laura Hamilton conduct a study in a residence hall where they discover that some students thrive and others fail, labeled as "social isolates." They were able to follow these students through their different pathways in college, the mobility pathway, the professional pathway, and the party pathway and how each can help with upwards mobility. Some of the social isolates were unsuccessful in socialization in the community because of a lack of trying but others attributed it to social or financial status.   4. post #8 Case

CASE A case study was conducted among a group of 472 students and it was correlated with the Tito’s Model of behavior. In this study,  “54%  of  study  respondents  indicated  that  they  did not  care  to engage  in campus  activities.  In  addition,  50%  also indicated  that  they  did not want  to spend  more  time  on  campus…Forty-three  percent  were  satisfied  with the college’s  cultural  programs,  whereas  46%  had  no opinion”  (p.  575). Forty-eight  percent  of  students  “reported  spending between 1  to 4  hours  on  campus,  and 33%  spent  no  additional  time on  campus  and  were  on  campus  only  during  their scheduled  class  times”  (p.  572-573). This shows that students that commute do not tend to linger around campus or participate in something other than their scheduled classes. “Students  reported  mixed  feelings  about  the  services offered  to  them…more  than one half  had no  opinion  about  the  tutoring  services offered”  (p.  573). Abstract For those who choose to commute to school, pros and cons have to be addressed. Money and time are an important factor when thinking about commuting as well as academic success. Individuals usually choose to commute because even if it is not the better option it is the cheaper option when people have to take into consideration what they need to do to attend school. The amount of financial aid offer is not the same for everyone which makes it hard for many to be able to dorm as an option. Commuting also affects the social life and campus life of students who attend the school. Research suggests that those students who choose to commute and live on campus are more inclined to stick with the friends they have made in high school rather than branching out to meet new people. Those who live on campus seemed to be pushed to a more independent lifestyle, since it is really the first time in which they are placed in a pool of unknown people leading them to have to make new friend

post #9 argument and counter argument

Argument My goal is to understand what are the consequences that commuting might cause to a student's life and compare it to the life of those who live on campus. Many students begin college with much enthusiasm are discouraged to continue by many different factors which ultimately can lead them to drop out. As a commuter myself, I know how very annoying, time consuming, and tiring it can be to commute for an hour to campus. Not only having to leave enough time to get to school but also, time to park, time to make snacks if I am staying for a long period of time, as well as other things such as gas and toll.  A commuters social life is affected as well, events are something that can not usually be attended being that aside from school, individuals have work, or have to leave in order to get home faster and try to avoid traffic, however, events can also be a distraction for many students. Research shows “One  possible  explanation  for  why  students  living  in  residence  halls

Theoretical frame: In order to understand the effects of commuting versus living on campus, the article “College Residence and Academic Performance: Who Benefits From Living on Campus? ” Will be used to compare data on findings. We will also examine other variables that could affect college student life such as events, money, living with family, or living alone. It’s 8 A.M. as I am stuck in rush hour traffic to get to class at 9 with an endless line of cars that aren’t moving. Waiting with annoyance and worrying about being late when the traffic is out of our control. This struggle is often encountered by many college students who choose to commute to school on an everyday basis. Aside from school, commuters usually have to include work, or having to take care of family or if they are older having to take care of their children. Commuting to school seems like a convenience however, with commuting come a lot of other problems that are usually unforeseen. This includes not being able to find parking, using meter parking, getting a parking pass, not to mention the stress that comes with driving on the road for anywhere between 30-90 minutes. Commuting also seems like a better option when tuition is so expensive and money is tight which doesn’t allow many to take advantage of living on campus. Commuting affects a student’s socia
