5. Key Terms / Concepts:
- Expectations: the student's performance depends on the expectations that the faculty and the students have for them. (the students) High expectations usually lead to succes but when there are ow expectations it only encourages failure.
- Support: the most important stage for support is the students first year. At this time there is time to give the students the tools required to improve or to lead them to the right direction. With the proper support, students can use the support to transition into the classrooms expectations.
- Assessment and feedback: students succeed the most in the type o f classrooms where their performance is assisted and also when they receive constant feedback from the staff. Especially during the students first year since they are figuring out their behavior to the college life.
- involvement: typically, the most that the student participates and is engaged with their peers, faculty, and in academically classroom activities, the better that the student will tend to succeed. This will lead to better learning and to fit into the classroom socially and academically.
6. Quotes:
"Without academic, social, and, in some cases, financial support, many students, especially those who enter college academically under-prepared, struggle to succeed in college." (Tinto. pg. 3)
"Most students today don't live on campus. a great many work while in college, especially those of low income backgrounds, and attend part time. They commute to class and once class is over, they leave to tend to other obligations, like work and family" (Tinto. Pg. 2)
"If we are to substantially increase college completion, especially among low income students, we must focus on improving success in the classroom, particularly during the students first year... for working, low-income students these moments for teaching and learning are limited." (Tinto. Pg. 2)
7. Value: Tinto mentions in his article how important it is for faculty and staff to have a relationship with the students. He emphasizes how the first year is one of the most important years for college students because is when they are learning and trying to adapt to the new way of living. They are at the stage where they can transition towards the right path if they are given the support. However, many of the students who commute do not get to experience the opportunities offered at school. they will not participate in the activities that are usually late at night after classes are over, the study sessions many organizations offer to help their classmates. Many times, is not because the commuter student does not want to stay on campus after his or her classes are over but because of obligations like work, the family, and responsibilities.
