Working title:
How Commuting to Campus Increases Social and Academic Disengagement."
Topic:
The topic of my paper will be how commuting affects a student’s social life, academic success and mental health. Commuting to school has different consequences on students when compared to those living on campus. Most commuter students are less affluent than those who are able to afford living on campus. Which means that most of the time the commuting students will have other responsibilities besides school. Many have a full time or part time jobs, duties and responsibilities at home, and bills to pay including their tuition bill every semester. Therefore, I will demonstrate the pros and cons of commuting while identifying what are the factors that lead students to commute. I want to explore what are the consequences of not being able to live on campus for the four years of college and how these consequences affect the students who end up commuting. Also, there are those students that do not fit into the dorm rooms or campus and decide to live back at home while only attending school for classes.
Research question:
What are the effects that commuting will bring to a student who cannot live on campus ? will the student benefit from commuting or are the negative effects bigger than the benefits? What are the longterm effects and who tends to do better academically and/or socially? Are commuting students usually less social by choice? How could commuters be able to participate and engage in school activities without interrupting their jobs or responsibilities? Lastly, are there enough resources at universities for those students who commute and cannot make it to campus on a daily basis?
Theoretical frame:
My goal is to understand what are the consequences that commuting might cause to a student's life. Many students begin college with enthusiasts but there are many factors that lead the student to disengage from their school and in many cases to drop out of college. I am a commuter and I have realized how hard it is to leave 2 hours early from your house, drive hour and 20 minutes to school and hour and 20 minutes back home. Also, social life changes drastically since you are not living on campus. Your friends realize that most likely you won't be able to attend most events and after a while you are no longer being invited. Therefore to further explain I will use the article, Exploring the Effects of Campus Residential Settings on Educational Outcomes by the Eisenberg Research. This article is based on the student’s economic status and how many times their financial situation will determine whether they will live on campus or commute. Also, the article The uncritical commute: The impact of students' living situations while at university by Luke Timmons, compares and identifies the differences and most importantly the EFFECTS in those students that are commuting and those living on campus.
Some terms that can help focus this article are, Engagement, Time Management, and Support.

Engagement for how students have a hard time getting involved in their school. Time Management to describe how time consuming commuting can be. And Support, for the lack of peer interaction commuters have”
